What is Lip Flip with Botox?
A lip flip is a nonsurgical cosmetic procedure where Botulinum Toxin (Botox) is injected into parts of your upper lip. Once the Botox settles (4-7 days), you will notice that your lips look fuller or “poutier” without adding any volume to your lip. Depending on your goals, duration, etc, a lip filip filler injections. A lip flip can also combat a “gummy smile”, which is a term used to defile when a person smiles and their top lip disappears. You usually see more of the gums/teeth than that upper lip. Because of where the Botox is placed, the upper lip won’t reveal as much of your gums as it won’t roll up when you smile.
How does it work?
Lip flips work by Botox being injected into the corners and edges of your upper lip. There are typically around four to six units of Botox injected to relax the muscles which surround the top lip and cause your lip to “flip” upwards a small amount – kind of like the corners are smiling slightly. This results in the lips to appear larger and fuller than normal.
Botox lip flip vs filler
While both Botox and Filler are injections to the lips – the two are actually quite different. While lip flip includes Botox injections into the corners and edges of the upper lip, lip fillers use dermal filler. The dermal filler is hyaluronic acid which is injected into all parts of your lips to add volume. The lip flip procedure based on treatment time is a quicker treatment than dermal fillers and has less side effects (ex: bruising, swelling, tenderness). However it can take up to one week to see results with a lip flip, whereas you can see immediate results with lip fillers. The plus side of this however, is that lip flip has minor swelling and bruising when compared to the swelling and bruising from dermal fillers, meaning the recovery time is little to none.
How long does a Botox lip flip last?
Although the procedure itself is quicker than lip fillers, with less side effects and less recovery time, they do last a considerably shorter time. The average time they last is approximately six weeks. This is because the Botox injections have an intentionally low dose of Botox units so the muscles around the lips can still move for eating, drinking, speaking etc. This low dose results in a reduced longevity.
Botox lip flip aftercare
Having a Botox lip flip can result in slight bruising and swelling around the injection site. However there is no recovery time and you should be able to continue your day straight after the procedure. We simply recommend that you avoid exercise for the remainder of the day, and try to not sleep face down at night. You can also eat and drink shortly after the procedure, but please be mindful of the foods you eat. Anything messy that may cause you to need to wipe your face should be avoided for the first few days. We also suggest avoiding straws and smoking – basically anything that makes your lips contract or pucker up – as this can cause the Botox to migrate and move from the positions it is placed in.
Summary
A lip flip is a great choice for people wanting a natural “lip lift”, but not so ideal for people wanting long lasting results. However, a lip lift is a quicker procedure, with less side effects and no recovery time. The price is also considerably cheaper than dermal fillers.
Getting a lip flip is always a good starter before getting lip fillers (if you are considering fillers). This is because you can see how your face and lips will look with poutier, more voluptuous lips. A lip flip can also be used to increase the longevity of lip fillers if you already have them.
