Preventative Botox: Does it work, and when should you start treatment?

Aging. It happens to us all, right? But many people are alarmed when they see signs of aging in their 20s and 30s! While we can’t promise you a sip from the fountain of youth, we can say with confidence that your next best option just might be preventative Botox.

But what even is preventative Botox? How does it work and how much does it cost? Is there an age requirement? Is the treatment right for you? Questions, questions, questions…

Let’s get you some answers!

What is preventative Botox?

Preventative Botox is a treatment that slows or prevents visible signs of aging, such as facial wrinkles and deep lines around the eyes. People often receive this treatment when fine lines first appear, before they develop into deeper wrinkles. For this reason, it’s not uncommon for young adults in their 20s and 30s to seek out preventative measures to prevent wrinkles from forming.

How does preventative Botox work?

Botox treatments contain a neurotoxic protein that relaxes the muscles in local injection sites. Botulinum toxin (shortened to Botox) is injected into areas that wrinkle due to:

  • Aging
  • UV rays and pollution
  • Loss of firmness and elasticity due to damaged collagen and elastin in the skin

You shouldn’t feel too much pain from Botox injections. Most people report a slight prick, similar to a small bug bite. An aesthetic injector injects Botox into your facial muscles. Botox then relaxes the facial muscles underneath the skin, by blocking signals and nerve responses, preventing you from making certain expressions that wrinkle areas of the face.

Why should you have preventative Botox?

An increasing number of younger people now openly choose Botox to prevent wrinkles in the future. Attitudes towards Botox treatments are changing, as people share on social media how their experiences benefitted them. Compare this to 20 years ago, when people flat out denied having treatments. Even asking someone whether they had Botox was borderline taboo!

So, what’s changed? Why are more younger people willing to start treatments? And why do they feel comfortable sharing their experiences? Truth is, Botox is a hugely popular cosmetic treatment that makes people feel better about themselves. Aging happens to us all and we each react to it differently. Some people own their wrinkles. Others want to get rid of them. There’s no right or wrong here.

It’s down to personal preference.

If the early signs of wrinkles discomfort or alarm you in any way, you might want to start Botox treatment as opposed to other anti aging solutions. Botox is a less intrusive treatment compared to plastic surgery yet it’s just as effective. Plus, unlike plastic surgery, it’s not a permanent change. Should you decide Botox isn’t for you, its effects will wear off after three to four months, and there’ll be no need for you to return for further treatment.

When should you start preventative Botox?

The majority of people who receive preventative Botox treatments are in their mid to late 20s and early 30s. Botox treatment for cosmetic purposes should only be performed on patients over the age of 18. Most experts agree that a good age range is mid 20s to early 30s.

If you are younger (but still over the age of 18) and wrinkles are a problem for you, please feel free to give us a call, and we can explore options that are truly best for you.

Areas where preventative Botox can be used

Our faces bear the marks of aging (or many years of a life well lived depending on who you ask!). Crows feet, glabellar lines (wrinkles between the eyebrows) and at the corners of mouths, are signs of smiles and laughter after all! But if wrinkles are nothing to smile about, you’ll be glad to know that preventative Botox can be applied areas most susceptible to wrinkles. These include:

  • Around the eyes
  • Between the eyebrows
  • Around the lips and mouth
  • The forehead

How much is preventative Botox?

A single unit of Botox typically costs about $14. The amount of Botox an individual needs depends on the reason for their treatment and how much of it they need to resolve the issue.

People develop wrinkles faster than others. Someone in their 20s may develop deeper wrinkles compared to someone in their early 30s who are just showing faint frown lines. Similarly, individuals the same age may wrinkle in one area, and the other has crow’s feet, deep frown lines and marionette lines (corner of the mouth).

As a guide, someone with faint frown lines would need approximately 20 units of Botox. Moderately deep wrinkles around the eyes or forehead need around 60 units. The price range could be anywhere between $280 – $1,000….

Still, it’s a cheaper alternative to hiring a plastic surgeon!

In Summary

Preventative Botox is an effective anti aging solution. Compared to plastic surgery, it’s more cost effective, less intrusive and is not a permanent solution that you might come to regret later in life.
