The lowdown on PRP hair treatment

In the United States, 66% of men will experience hair loss by age 35. This shocking statistic means that hair loss is something that most men will face at some point in their lives.

The good news? There are many ways to combat hair loss – especially if you treat it in its thinning stages.. In the past, the best options were expensive and lengthy hair transplants…or medication with harmful side effects. At Facial Aesthetics, we offer a revolutionary treatment:  PRP for hair loss

PRP therapy has been around for a few decades (it’s FDA-approved to treat joints in orthopedic practices). However, it’s only in the last five years or so that skin care experts have become aware of the amazing benefits of PRP for hair loss – and as experts in the skin care space, it is probably no surprise why we brought it to our practice. It’s been rapidly growing in popularity due to its minimal downtime and side effects.

It’s the perfect solution for men who aren’t candidates for hair transplants or can’t tolerate topical treatments or medications. PRP hair treatment can help get you a fuller and thicker head of hair naturally!

What’s Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)?

PRP (or Platelet Rich Plasma) is concentrated blood plasma. It’s made up of a mixture of white blood cells and platelets – this is the stuff that helps promote hair growth.

To get the PRP, an experienced technician will draw your blood. Then there’s an extraction process to separate the platelets from the red blood cells. The blood is spun in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets.

The result? Plasma that’s richer in platelets than normal – hence the name Platelet-Rich Plasma. Using your body’s own growth factors to stimulate hair growth is what sets PRP from other hair loss treatments!

What is PRP therapy?

After the PRP has been concentrated, it’s injected directly into the areas of the scalp that need increased hair growth. This is a careful process. It requires injections every half inch over the area of thinning hair.

PRP stops or reverses the progressive hair follicle miniaturization that’s responsible for hair thinning and loss. It also stimulates the growth of these hair follicles to combat early signs of male pattern baldness.

What’s the process of PRP for hair loss?

We recommend that men receive three initial treatments of PRP therapy spaced approximately one month apart. This gives time for the initial treatments to take effect and for you to start seeing results.

After these initial treatments, our expert clinicians have found that it’s best to wait six months before repeating the same three treatment cycles. A maintenance treatment every 6-8 months ensures continued hair growth – so you can continue seeing fantastic results for years to come!

Each treatment lasts around 30 – 45 minutes. The plasma injections might cause some discomfort. Many clinics will offer the option of numbing so you can be as comfortable as possible. Cool air and ice packs can also minimize any potential pain.

PRP hair treatment cost

If you’re considering PRP for hair loss, the price will likely be a big factor when making your decision. Although PRP is not cheap, it’s significantly cheaper than other treatments like hair transplants.

Unfortunately, the price varies a lot across the United States. It will depend on the quality of materials and the expertise and experience of the clinic you choose. One PRP injection can cost between $400–$1300.

PRP hair treatment side effects and downtime

After your treatment, you may experience some minor side effects, such as temporary swelling and possible bruising. However, these side effects usually only last for a week or two.

One of the biggest advantages of choosing PRP for hair restoration is the complete lack of downtime – you can resume your normal activities immediately!

What results can I expect from PRP therapy for hair loss?

In a few words … a thicker, fuller head of hair.

You could start to see results as early as 2-3 months after your initial PRP hair treatment – we find most patients note less hair shedding followed by signs of hair regrowth and longer hair.

However, PRP is not the right treatment for everyone. It works best when there is existing thinning hair, or you’re in the early stages of male pattern hair loss. At Facial Aesthetics, we offer a free consultation to help you decide whether PRP for hair loss is right for you.
