The wild world of skin care can feel overwhelming if you are just starting out. There is so much buzz around trending ingredients, products to use, and what to avoid. You have to wonder where to even start.

Remember this…when you’re in the learning phase of anything, no one expects you to know everything. This is true in the world of skin care, too. Your end goal is to have healthy, glowing skin. It shouldn’t be complicated to get there. Learn as much as you can. Do things for your skin that you’re confident will help you achieve your goals.

Finding your skin type

You might have heard the phrase “do what’s right for your skin type” thrown around, but could never really pinpoint what it actually meant. Let’s elaborate….your skin type is how your skin looks, feels, and behaves. The standard five skin types are:

Skin type is determined by a number of things. This can include genetics, environment, age, and daily habits. We want to make it clear that there is no one skin type better than another. Once you have a better understanding of your skin, you can better take care of it. There are several articles out there on how to figure out your skin type. Chances are, however, that you already have a good grasp on what your skin type is.

If you need to constantly apply moisturizer, you might be dry. If you find yourself dabbing off excess oil from your skin, you might be oily. If you only seem to breakout around your t-zone and chin, you might be combination. If you often have red dots, rashes, or weird face “freak outs”, then you’re sensitive. If you honestly don’t have a lot of issues with your skin, then you’re probably normal.

Once you have your skin type in mind, you can start shopping for products specifically designed for your skin. For instance, toner works best on people with oily/combination skin. Then, dry skin might need to use a moisturizer that packs a bit more punch.

Trying Out Different Products

Now we are at the fun part! Trying different products and brands to see what works for you is what makes skin care enjoyable. This might take a lot of trial and error if you are completely new to the game. Some products will work, while others are just so-so. The important thing here is to not quit. Don’t just settle for something that you just like, find a product that you absolutely love. Remember that you NEVER have to feel alone on the journey to healthy skin. Getting a recommendation from a skin care expert takes a lot of the guesswork out. Our aestheticians love to analyze your skin and pair you with the right products. Sticking To A Routine That Works For You

We hate to break it to you, but there will never be a magical product that you use once and your skin suddenly looks like a permanent Snapchat filter. You will, however, see the desired changes in your skin after you create a set routine for yourself. When you are first dipping your toe into skin care, it’s important to create a routine that is manageable for you. Some people can handle a 10 step routine morning and night. Maybe someday that will even be you. Being that this post is meant for newbies, we want to keep it simple.

The fewer products that you use, the more important it becomes for them to work. We recommend finding a cleanser that you absolutely know cleans your skin at night and a moisturizer that keeps you hydrated. From there, sunscreen is the only product we will ever say is an everyday MUST! Healthy skin is a necessity. There is no debate.

Feeling More Confident

Whether your goal is just to find a cleanser and moisturizer that works for you or learn so much about skin care that you become the “go-to” among your friends, you’re definitely not a newbie anymore. You’ve figured out your skin type. You’re figuring out what you like and what doesn’t work, and you’re one step closer to having the healthy skin you’ve always wanted. Skin care should be second nature to you. Once you’ve practiced the habit, it’ll become as simple as brushing your teeth every morning and night.

And remember: there will always be something new or trending. Don’t let that overwhelm you. The important thing is feeling confident with your knowledge and your skin.
