How exciting! You’ve made an appointment to get lip filler. Filling lips just might be one of our favorite areas to fill here at Facial Aesthetics. While we love injecting all areas of the face, the lips are so fun. You already know this…when most people hear lip filler, they think of unnatural, overfilled lips. It’s true the media has given this amazing treatment a bad rap and not to mention the many inexperience injectors that have been trusted to perform this very strategic procedure. But, natural looking is something we strive for here. It’s our name that goes with our work and we want to be happy with every outcome we provide!

If you’re getting lip fillers for the first time, you probably have some questions. You might wonder if it’s even possible for lip fillers to look 100% natural – this one comes with an easy answer: yes, absolutely.

The right lip filler (in the hands of qualified and experienced professionals) can achieve whatever look you want – from bold and plump to subtle, natural-looking lips.

We’ve covered everything else you need to know about lip fillers, so you’re fully prepared to take the plunge and transform your lips! Our expert advice covers what lip fillers are, how long they last, the results of lip fillers, the side effects and downtime, common lip fillers, and how to choose a reputable med spa for your first appointment.

What is lip filler?

Lip fillers are just dermal fillers specially designed to add volume, shape, and structure to your lips. They’re injected using a thin needle in a completely non-invasive procedure with minimal downtime – it’s easy to see why they’re so popular!

Most lip fillers are made from synthetic hyaluronic acid (HA), a natural substance already in your body. The HA injections bind with water molecules giving you hydrated and plump lips.

How long does lip filler last?

Most lip fillers last around 9 -12 months. However, the exact time your fillers will last depends on the speed of your metabolism (how quickly your body converts calories into energy). Younger people tend to have higher metabolisms, so their lip fillers might not last as long.

What are the results of lip fillers?

As you age, you might start to lose volume in your lips – this could be because of genetics, smoking, sun damage, or just the natural aging process. Lip filler injections can help restore your natural lip size and shape.

Lip fillers can also:

  • Even out asymmetrical lips
  • Reduce the appearance of fine lines on the lips and the surrounding area
  • Increase your lips’ volume
  • Add definition to your lip line to give you poutier lips
  • Accentuate the shape of your Cupid’s bow
  • Lift the corners of your mouth to improve your smile
  • Correct down-turned lips
  • Be customized based on your desired look
  • Boost your self-confidence by helping you feel better about the way your lips look

Side effects and downtime

Lip filler treatment has very little downtime, especially compared to surgical lip procedures like lip augmentation. You can resume most of your normal activities after just 24 hours.

However, you should avoid touching the injected area for at least 24 hours. This will reduce the chance of harmful bacteria getting in. At Facial Aesthetics, we will provide you with more detailed post-care instructions so you know just how to care for your beautiful lips.

There are minimal side effects of lip injections. However, some people might experience minor side effects, such as bleeding or pain at the injection site, discoloration or tenderness, and infection.

Lip fillers conducted by inexperienced or ill-qualified professionals can also result in migration (where the filler travels from the injection site), tissue death (especially if injected into an artery), and asymmetrical lips. This is why it’s so crucial that you choose a reputable med spa for your procedure.

Lip filler swelling stages

You might experience swelling after lip fillers. Immediately after the procedure, your lips might be sensitive and bruised. In the first few days, your lips will be the most swollen – it’s important not to panic, as the swelling will start to subside after 5-7 days.

Two weeks after your appointment, your lips should be close to fully recovered. This is when you can start to enjoy the final results of your new lips! After a month, the filler will be fully settled, and the healing process should have finished.

What are some of the most common lip fillers?

The most common types of fillers are all hyaluronic acid fillers. This substance is found naturally in your skin, tissue, and cartilage. These dermal fillers can easily achieve soft and subtle-looking lips (if that’s what you want!).

Two of the most common dermal fillers designed for lips are Volbella and Restylane Kysse.

Volbella

Volbella is an FDA-approved HA dermal filler specially formulated to enhance lips and reduce fine lines. It replaces naturally occurring acids in your lips, which are lost as you age. The result? Soft and natural-looking lips.

Restylane Kysse

This is another HA filler that is designed specifically for lips. Restylane Kysse is ideal for younger people with thin lips or older people who’ve experienced volume loss. Many people opt for this filler due to its long-lasting and natural-looking results!

How to choose a reputable med spa for your first lip filler

When it comes to getting your first lip filler treatment, it’s essential you choose the right medspa or clinic… Do your own research, and don’t rush into any decisions. However, there are a couple of things you should look for in a reputable clinic.

Qualifications

Make sure to check the qualifications of the professionals who will be administering the lip filler. Look for Certified Aesthetic Nurse Specialists, Physician Assistants, or Registered Nurses.

Experience

Ask how much experience the clinic has. What is their training like? Have they offered dermal and lip fillers for years, or is it a relatively new service?

Free consultations

Most med spas offer free, no-obligation consultations for all their services. This allows you to speak with a professional and decide if lip fillers are right for you!
