Dysport 101: Everything you need to know

Frown lines and wrinkles are perfectly normal signs of aging. They’re proof of every time you’ve laughed with happiness or frowned in frustration.

We’ll all get them, but that doesn’t mean we all have to love them!

Our facial muscles contract when we laugh and frown, and we end up with creases over time. Our skin becomes less elastic as we age, and these creases deepen into lines. These permanent lines can make us look angry or worried even when we’re not! Plus, they make us appear older than we are.

Injections, like Dysport, can smooth out these lines and help prevent further wrinkles. Dysport can help you look more youthful and less stressed by immobilizing the facial muscles we use to frown.

This ultimate guide will cover everything you need to know about Dysport, including its uses, effectiveness, side effects, and how it compares to Botox.

What is a Dysport injection?

Even if you know nothing about Dysport, you’ve likely heard of Botox. Dysport is very similar to Botox. Both of these neurotoxins are used to treat fine lines and facial wrinkles.

First approved by the FDA in 2009, Dypsort has been proven to be an effective and non-invasive cosmetic procedure. Like Botox, its active ingredient is Botulinum Type A.

Once Dysport has been injected, it disables the nerves near the injection site. It smoothes out and relaxes the skin and limits muscle movement. This prevents the creation or deepening of forehead wrinkles usually caused by your facial expressions. Although this might sound terrifying, this procedure is incredibly safe and mostly pain-free.

Most treatments require three to five small injections into the facial muscles for the best results. No local anesthetic is required, and these injections are almost painless! The best part? Most Dysport treatments take around 15 minutes to complete.

What is Dysport used for?

It’s most commonly used to treat frown lines and forehead lines, or glabellar lines as they’re sometimes called. Small amounts of neurotoxin are injected into the facial muscles underneath the frown lines.

Good candidates for Dysport are adults under 65 with moderate to severe cases of wrinkles.

How long does Dysport take to work?

After getting Dysport injections, you will see results fairly quickly. Usually, you’ll notice results around 2 -3 days after your treatment session.

However, you’ll need to wait approximately 2 weeks after your treatment to see the final results.

How long does Dysport last?

If you’re considering Dysport injections to reduce the appearance of your frown lines, then you’ll want to know how long the treatment will last. Typically injections last between 12 and 16 weeks. However, exactly how long your results last will depend on you as an individual.

To maintain the results of your injections, you’ll need around 3 or 4 sessions a year.

How effective is Dysport?

Dysport is becoming more and more popular, but does it work?

A 2019 clinical study found that Dysport was effective at temporarily removing frown lines in over 80% of participants

However, the effectiveness of Dysport also relies on the patient. To get the most out of your Dysport injections and see the best results, it’s important to follow any before and aftercare advice given to you by the clinician.

It’s also important to note that each patient and their skin/muscles are different. For example, what may work for one patient may not show much difference for another. Meaning one patient may see amazing results from smaller amounts of Dysport than another.

What are Dysport’s side effects?

According to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology, side effects of Dysport are rare. However, some people may experience the following:

  • Mild bruising
  • Drooping eyelids
  • Muscle weakness
  • Facial asymmetry

Dermatologists can use thinner needles to help reduce these side effects and prevent soreness at the injection site.

After your Dysport procedure, you must follow the post-treatment instructions given by your clinician to ensure you get the best possible results and reduce the likelihood of side effects.

How much does Dysport cost?

Giving an average price for Dysport injections can be difficult because the total cost will depend on how many units of Dysport are used. Typically Dysport will cost around $450 a session, but this will vary greatly depending on the location and dosage required.

The best way to get a price will be to speak to a reputable clinic. They’ll be able to offer a free consultation to discuss how to help you reduce your lines and wrinkles and how much it will cost.

Dysport vs. Botox

Dysport and Botox are very similar: they’re both non-invasive, non-surgical procedures with little to no downtime. Both neurotoxins last around 3-4 months, and you’ll need regular treatments to maintain your results.

However, there are some key differences. Botox is usually used to treat smaller areas, as once injected, it stays within the injection area. However, Dysport is preferred for larger areas, such as your forehead, because it spreads further. Also, Botox is usually slightly more expensive than Dysport.
