If you’re looking for a cosmetic treatment to get rid of fine lines and wrinkles and make your skin look younger, you may have looked into injectables or other non-invasive treatments.
Microneedling and Botox are now popular skin treatments for helping to fight the signs of aging and provide your skin with a youthful glow. However, there are differences between the two that will help to determine which treatment is right for you.

Botox is a non-invasive, FDA approved cosmetic treatment that is effective at reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Botox is a protein derivative of Botulinum Toxin and is injected into the underlying muscles of your face and works by temporarily paralyzing the treated facial muscles enough to prevent the movements and facial expressions that cause fine lines and wrinkles on your face.
The effects of Botox injections are not permanent and results tend to last between three to six months, when you will need to return for treatment in order to maintain your results. For anti-aging treatments, Botox is most commonly used to treat frown lines and crow’s feet.

Microneedling (also known as collagen induction therapy) is another popular anti-aging, non-surgical treatment. The treatment involves a tool made up of tiny needles which create small puncture wounds in your skin.
Microneedling works by tricking your skin into thinking it has been injured and stimulates a healing response which includes the production of collagen and elastin. These are both elements that help to keep your skin firm, radiant and youthful – the production of these decreases as we age.
In addition, microneedling makes it easier for the serums and skin care products you use to absorb into your skin and work more effectively.
You will need a course of microneedling treatments but, in contrast to Botox, the results don’t fade or wear off. However, you will need to maintain the results by taking care of your skin with a dedicated skincare routine to ensure that your skin keeps producing collagen and elastin.
The treatment you choose will depend on what you’re looking to achieve. Whilst both are extremely effective anti-aging treatments and help to treat a range of skin issues, they differ in the way they work and the results they provide.
Both treatments are suitable for all skin types and some patients opt to combine the two treatments for the best results.
If you want to improve the surface and condition of your skin, microneedling is the perfect treatment. It’s perfect for anti-aging, tightening loose skin, making your skin appear brighter and to reduce the appearance of uneven skin tone.
On the other hand, Botox is the best treatment if you want to get rid of stubborn lines and wrinkles on your face. It won’t have any effect on the collagen or elastin produced by your skin.
On their own Botox and microneedling provide great results, providing you with a more youthful appearance. Having both treatments together helps to optimise the results of each treatment, leaving you with new skin cells forming and helping to prevent or reduce wrinkles.
Botox can also be used alongside chemical peels to help you combat the signs of aging and improve the appearance of your skin. Read more about Botox and chemical peels in our guide.
