5 Step Guide To Get Your Skin Fit For Spring

We’re it. We’re where Denverites go to get their skin in shape. Nice to meet you if you’re new here…and welcome back if you’re a Beauty Room regular.

When we talk about the changing of the seasons, it’s hard to avoid talking about the weather. We know that our weather here in Denver, Colorado, is beautiful, yet fickle. We get to enjoy every season for what it is, which is what most people love about living here.

The winter to spring season change is a big one for us who live here. Our winters are dry, cold and snowy and can be notoriously harsh on many things (including our nerves when driving through a blizzard). It can be harsh on our skin, too. The level of dryness is at an all-time high in the winter months, and our skin suffers from it.

So, peek your head out from your cocoon of blankets and Netflix, put down your coffee, it’s time to let your skin shine. Here’s our five-step guide on how to get your skin in shape this spring:

Step One: Prepare For The Transition

Just like we change out our wardrobes (winter coats for spring jackets) we need to do the same for our skin. We’re not saying you need to go out and purchase a whole new lineup of products, we’re just saying to take inventory and be prepared for some skin changes, should they occur. The season change can cause changes in our skin’s health and appearance – if you’re prone to skin conditions like psoriasis, eczema, acne or rosacea, be on the lookout for any potential flare-ups and stay ahead of their triggers. Do your homework on med spa treatments that can help should you need them.

Step Two: Shed That Winter Coat (aka Exfoliate)

Just because you’re not a bear, doesn’t mean you don’t have a winter coat. We all have one heading into spring. We want to shed that top layer of skin and we do that with proper exfoliation. This does not mean to scrub your skin so hard with a loofah that it dries out and gets irritated (who’s been there? 🙋‍♀️). Exfoliating removes dead skin cells from the top layer of our dermis to reveal a smoother, more even skin tone. It also aids in circulation and helps skin cell turnover time stay low. Our skin naturally sheds dead skin cells every 30 days or so – and unfortunately, as we age, the cell turnover process can take longer. In the winter, our skin can get dry and flaky, and we have more skin cells that need to be removed by exfoliating, so don’t skip this important step to get your skin fit for spring.

We offer medical grade products for purchase that can help you exfoliate properly. We also have these fantastic treatments that will remove your skin’s impurities in one single treatment and give you the perfect head start on the season:

Step Three: SPF Is Your Forever BFF

While you should always wear sunscreen with an SPF of 30/45+ all year round, chances are you will be applying it more liberally in warmer weather. Always make sure to carry your sunscreen with you. Springtime in Denver can see some warmer temperatures so don’t underestimate the power of the sun and be prepared. If you’re looking for the best SPF in the biz, we sell the top brands like Elta, Alastin, ColoreScience and more. Shop here.

Step Four: Spring Clean Your Routine

Out with the old and in with the new. We encourage you to schedule a consultation with one of our Medical Aestheticians this month and let us recommend the best products for YOUR skin. Like we said before, it doesn’t mean you need to buy a brand-new line-up, it’s just about making sure you’re making the proper changes in your routine during the coming warmer months. Maybe it’s just as simple as switching out a product that you already have in your cabinet.

Here’s a few ideas of what we have in mind:

  • It’s time to retire your heavy, winter-proof creams and opt for a lighter weighted moisturizer. Maybe enjoy a lightweight cream with hyaluronic acid to keep skin plump and hydrated.
  • Introduce an antioxidant like Vitamin C to help protect against sun damage, boost collagen, and treat hyperpigmentation.
  • Trial a chemical exfoliant like glycolic acid a few times a week to help shed the dead skin from the winter months.
  • As mentioned above, springtime in Denver sees high UV index increases and a separate SPF application is a necessity. Finding a good SPF makes all the difference in your routine – so does applying it daily. IYKYK.

Step Five: Sweat it out…but wash it off.

With the warmer spring weather, chances are that you’ll be outside more. Whether you’re hiking, taking new fitness classes, or just running around doing errands, it’s normal for your body to sweat. Sweating is your body’s natural way of detoxing excess toxins. Sounds good right? It is. But it’s also about how you care for your skin after you sweat that will help you keep it healthy. When you sweat, your pores release sebum (oil) and dead skin. When these impurities stay on your skin, the body will start to reabsorb them, which can sometimes lead to breakouts or rashes. It’s important to wash your face or even hop in the shower at night or after a workout to wash away the bacteria, dirt, oils and impurities that your body just worked so hard to purge.
