How Botox works
Before we take a look at how often Botox is needed, it’s important to understand how it works.
Every time you make a facial expression, such as raising an eyebrow, smiling, or crying, the muscles in your face contract. These muscles allow you to form facial expressions, but they can also cause fine lines and wrinkles to form. Over time, these wrinkles and lines become more permanent fixtures.
Botox is a neurotoxin and a cosmetic treatment which acts as a local paralytic. It blocks the nerves from sending messages to your facial muscles to prevent the muscles in your face from contracting and will soften and relax wrinkles and fine lines.
It’s important to understand that it only temporarily blocks the nerves so the results are not permanent and further treatments will be needed to maintain the results.

How often should you have Botox treatments?
Let’s start with a consultation! When you have your initial consultation with your aesthetic injector, they will talk to you about the results you’re looking for. and the areas you want to treat. They will then be able to recommend the best places to inject Botox, the number of units of Botox required, and how often you’ll need to go back.
How often you need to get this treatment will depend on your age, your wrinkles and how long the treatment usually last for you. There is not one right answer for this question because every patient is different.
TThe best Botox treatment plan will be personalized to you based on the results you want to achieve and how quickly your body metabolizes the Botox. Therefore, it’s so important to choose a qualified professional who will be able to recommend the best dosage for you.
For a rough guideline, results usually last around three to four months. It’s possible some patients see six months between treatments while others see movement return after a few short months. Understanding your body’s metabolism will allow you to maintain your results and schedule your treatments appropriately.
Factors that can affect the number of Botox treatments you need
As we have already mentioned, the number of Botox treatments you need will depend on a range of factors. We have outlined these below to give you an understanding of why Botox works differently for everyone.
Dosage/number of units
With Botox, the more units injected, the longer it will last. But remember that the more units that are injected, the more frozen the injection area will become. Most patients do not want their facial muscles to be and want to look and feel more natural.
When you’re deciding on how many units you want to have, your injector should be able to properly set your expectations for when you’ll need to schedule your next visit. If you’re new to Botox, a two-week follow-up is so important to the success of your treatment. Don’t skip them!
Metabolization rate
After your Botox treatment, your body will start to slowly metabolize the ingredients in your injections. Over time, the injection will be completely metabolized, and your muscles will return to how they were before your treatment.
Everyone’s body metabolizes Botox differently so the way your body responds to it is a factor in how long your Botox will last. Some people metabolize the treatment in around 12 weeks but, for others, it can take longer.
Size and depth of wrinkles or lines
The length of time your Botox treatment lasts will depend on the size and depth of the lines and wrinkles on your face. Mild lines and wrinkles can be suppressed for longer, but deeper lines may start to become visible much sooner.
How often do you need Botox for crow’s feet?
BBotox is the most popular solution to treat crow’s feet (wrinkles around the outside and at the corner of your eyes). After the treatment, you will see the muscles around your eyes start to relax and will not crinkle as much when you smile or laugh.
Botox for crow’s feet can last ~ three to four months. You may also start to notice a long-term decrease in wrinkles with this treatment.
How often do you need Botox in your forehead?
One to two days after your treatment, the muscles in your forehead will begin to relax and your skin will become smoother. You will see the full results in 10 to 14 days. Once your muscles have fully relaxed, you will expect to see results for ~three to four months.
