A stubborn double chin that you can’t seem to lose with diet and exercise is a pretty common problem. In a survey by Allergan, 49% of people said the area under their chin had a negative impact on their appearance.
The good news is that there is a simple, non-invasive way to help melt your double chin and boost your self-esteem…
Meet Kybella. Kybella is an FDA-approved injectable designed to target and reduce excess neck or chin fat.
We’ve put together everything you need to know about this exciting treatment. This blog will cover:

What is Kybella?
Kybella uses synthetic deoxycholic acid to target fat below your chin. It mimics a naturally occurring acid that breaks down and destroys fat cells… eliminating that pesky double chin!
The treatment usually involves several injections over several months to achieve the best results. Your exact course of treatment will depend on how much fat there is and your desired results.
Who can get Kybella injections?
It’s important to understand that Kybella is not a fat loss treatment – it’s very specifically designed to target stubborn pockets of fat under your chin. The ideal candidate for Kybella should be in fairly good health with moderate to severe submental fullness (double chin).
How does it work?
Deoxycholic acid is a bile acid that’s naturally produced by your body. It helps break down and absorb fat. When a synthetic form of this acid (the main ingredient in Kybella) is injected into the fat below the chin, it destroys the cell membranes. This ultimately eliminates the fat cells in the submental area (your chin).
Kybella works by preventing fat from ever forming again in that area. You heard that right; Kybella is a permanent fat-reduction solution… it’s not possible for any new fat cells to form – they’re eliminated for good!
However, it’s still possible for the fat cells left behind to enlarge with weight gain. This is why it’s important that if you’re considering Kybella, you’re focused on maintaining a healthy diet and exercise.
What will your appointment look like?
When you schedule at Facial Aesthetics, you’ll enjoy a complimentary consultation. This is where a qualified aesthetic injector will conduct a full assessment to check if Kybella is the right treatment for you. We’ll also recommend the number of sessions you’ll need to achieve the results you want.
During your actual Kybella appointment is where the magic happens. Our aesthetic injectors will determine how many injections need to be made. These injections will be made strategically to cover the whole area, ensuring the best possible results.
Most people require between 20 and 30 small injections – which might sound like a lot, but goes very fast during treatment. The injections should only feel like mild pinches with a slight warming sensation as the drug is dispersed. Remember, we offer many ways to make you comfortable during treatment! And numbing is always an option if you experience any discomfort or are worried about your pain tolerance!
Most patients require between two and four Kybella injection sessions, which must be spaced six weeks apart.
What results can you expect?
After a clinical trial involving Kybella, 82.4% of participants said they were much happier with their appearance!
However, Kybella injections don’t work instantly – it takes time for your body to break down the fat cells, so don’t be alarmed if you don’t see results right away. Over the next 2-4 weeks, you’ll see your profile start to sharpen and that fat under the chin start to disappear.
How much does it cost?
The cost of your Kybella treatment will depend on the number of injections and treatments you need. Most Kybella treatments cost around $1,200 – $1,800.
Kybella downtime, side effects, and recovery time
Kybella is such a popular treatment because of its minimal downtime and speedy recovery, especially when compared to surgical cosmetic treatments like liposuction.
Immediately after your appointment, you’ll likely experience some discomfort around the injection site, but this should dissipate quickly.
With Kybella, swelling around the treatment area should also be expected. There will be the most swelling around 24 hours after you receive your Kybella injections. However, it will reduce over the following week as the Kybella breaks down and destroys your submental fat cells forever!
Kybella is considered a safe, nonsurgical procedure, but there are still a few common side effects, including pain, numbness, redness, and bruising. These side effects should only last a week or so after your appointment.
More severe side effects are possible, such as facial muscle weakness and trouble swallowing, but these are very rare – if you’re concerned, our aesthetic injectors will be able to help put your mind at ease when it comes to what you should expect.
