But really…what are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable treatments that are most often made of hyaluronic acid in the form of a gel-like substance. They are most commonly known to reduce the appearance of facial lines and restore volume and fullness to the face. Dermal filler is injected into the skin using a syringe. How Do Fillers Work?

Two compounds naturally occur in your body that affect how elastic, voluminous, and wrinkled your skin appears:

Collagen: Collagen is one of the most plentiful proteins in your body. It is essential to helping your skin maintain its elasticity and keep it wrinkle-free. If you stretch a bit of your skin and watch it snap back into place, that’s collagen in action. The protein also helps your skin heal from wounds and injuries.
Hyaluronic acid: This is a clear, gelatinous substance that holds water to help keep your skin voluminous and hydrated. A molecule of hyaluronic acid can hold a thousand times its weight in water. It continually moisturizes your skin throughout the day.

As you age, your body’s production of collagen and hyaluronic acid declines. Starting in your mid-20s, you produce about 1 percent less per year of each substance. This manufacturing never naturally picks back up again. This decline in the production of collagen and hyaluronic acid is one of the biggest reasons why people’s faces start to show signs of aging. Other factors, such as exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays and smoking, also degrade collagen and hyaluronic acid.

As mentioned above, most fillers that we offer at Facial Aesthetics are made of hyaluronic acid. They’re also designed to stimulate the production of collagen in the treatment areas. By infusing your skin with these substances, fillers allow collagen and hyaluronic acid to do their job and heal your skin of the visible signs of aging.

How long do Dermal Fillers last?

This is an important question for patients, and for good reason. With dermal filler, you can expect to love your look for up to 12 months. Because dermal filler breaks down and metabolizes over time (through the body’s natural excretion process), its duration is different for everyone. It may last longer for some patients, whereas for others a touch-up may come before the 12-month period.
